MOVIE REVIEW : The White Tiger (2021)
Based on the novel of the same name, The White Tiger is a 2021 drama starring Rajkumar Rao and Priyanka Chopra. With sharp wit and potent satirical commentary, the film manages to ask several questions about affluent India while analyzing structural poverty in the country at the same time. Ramin Bahrani, known previously for 99 Homes and Farienheit 451, directs the film commandingly, never losing sight of the broader message that the narrative is trying to deliver amidst all the chaos depicted onscreen. Both Rao and Chopra deliver powerhouse performances but even their star power fades in front of newcomer Adarsh Gourav who plays the protagonist with such earnestness that he easily becomes the star of this powerful story. Bahrani keeps the narrative flowing at a fast pace with several twists and turns that add to the tension and thrill, keeping audiences engrossed till the very end. The White Tiger accomplishes what it sets out to do in style, illustrating the complex social structures of India coupled with upward economic mobility in a rags to riches story that is shocking, emotional and ultimately inspiring.
